Your Wealth Matters

LEARNING TO BE TRULY CONTENT

You are probably familiar with the expression: “The grass is always greener on the other side.” Likely, you have experienced this reference first-hand, as I have. Maybe you wish you had someone else’s job, car, luxury handbag, or wealth. This effect seems to happen when we look beyond what we have in front of us and often leaves us wanting in our own lives. Admiration, which is harmless, has the potential to morph into jealousy, greed and resentment if we aren’t careful. And if we dwell too much on what we don’t have, we surely will be miserable.

The big question is, ‘how can we be content with our financial situation?’ I think that, for starters, we need to be able to look for the positive through any circumstances whether we deem them to be good or tough. This can require a shift in our perspective, this being able to recognize the good in sometimes less than ideal scenarios. But if done regularly, as an act of self-discipline, much like exercise we will form that habit of recognizing beauty for ashes and hopefully come to a place of contentment whether we have a little or a lot. I think of Paul as my personal role model, as he says in Philippians 4:11-12 “…for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.”

The reason this issue needs addressing is that it is not one that goes away as our bank accounts get bigger. We think it is important to take the time to work with our clients to create financial goals which go beyond just having a plentiful nest egg. Our goal is to lead clients in the direction of recognizing the limited time we have here on Earth; the time and resources that we do have must be used wisely and will be a blessing to others if properly planned and executed. Let us not look to ‘the other side of the fence,’ but instead take stock of what is in front of us; this is how we will find real joy.
